Tobacco: The Role of Health Professionals in Smoking Cessation - Joint Statement (2001).
 
In 2001, several Canadian health associations (Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists, Canadian Association of Social Workers, Canadian Dental Association, Canadian Medical Association, Canadian Nurses Association, Canadian Pharmacists Association, Canadian Physiotherapy Association, Canadian Psychological Association and Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists) prepared a joint statement outlining the role of the health-care provider in smoking cessation.
 
Smokers Helpline (SHL) 1-877-513-5333
The Canadian Cancer Society Smokers Helpline is a free, confidential service that provides personalized support, advice and information about quitting smoking and tobacco use. Clients can speak with a Quit Specialist at 1-877-513-5333 to develop a quit plan, get information about quitting methods, receive self help materials, link to local resources and more. The service can also be accessed online at smokershelpline.ca where clients will have access to a personalized Quit Centre, Quit Buddies instant messaging, support group forums and a Quit Meter. Northwest Territories Quitline
The NWT Quitline is a confidential, toll free helpline for smokers who want to quit. The line offers:

Tobacco Free RNAO
 
TobaccoFreeRNAO.ca is an educational and community-based website for Registered Nurses, Student Nurses and other Health Professionals.  The information provided on TobaccoFreeRNAO.ca is based on the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO) Best Practice Guideline (BPG) "Integrating Smoking Cessation into Daily Nursing Practice".  Content on the website includes upcoming workshops for Nurses to become Smoking Cessation Champions, a free e-learning course, educational information on smoking cessation interventions, implementation strategies, RNAO resources, and information on the current RNAO Smoking Cessation Best Practice Initiative.  The website also includes an online community where registrants can ask questions to smoking cessation experts, and share experiences on discussion boards.  TobaccoFreeRNAO.ca is designed to provide information to nurses on the RNAO Smoking Cessation BPG while also creating a community where nurses can discuss smoking cessation strategies.  Join the TobaccoFreeRNAO.ca community today!  For more information about the TobaccoFreeRNAO.ca and the resources available, www.TobaccoFreeRNAO.ca or contact Catherine Wood, Administrative Assistant, at cwood@rnao.org

The purpose of the The Smoke-Free Long Term Care Homes Project is to help LTC homes in the transition to a new and safer healthcare environment. The project aims to help build capacity within the LTC home sector in order to sustain smoke-free environments.
